Ahh bless him, him being Robert Smith of The Cure fame. For a band that has sold an estimated 27million albums worldwide, he seems to have a deep sense of “holy shit, I can’t believe people listen to my music”. Oddly enough, ‘The Lovecats’ made it to #7, and I say oddly as it was probably their most jazz influenced song ever. I got into the Cure when I was an angst-ridden teenager (not really angsty, I was a teenager tho) and have proceeded to listen to pretty much everything they release. Some of it is great, some of it is horible, most is listenable. The reason I’m talking abou tthe Cure tho is due to this week’s album additions, no not more new Cure albums, but 2 compilations of tributes to them. I mean, for a band that wasn’t craving success, having 2 albums released within a month of each other containing other bands playing your music, it’s well, successful?
As for the compilations themselves – as usual very hit & miss. The Submarines version of Boys Don’t Cry strips the song back from a energetic ditty to zombie slow wail (in a good way), Dean & Britta turn Friday I’m In Love into an orchestral infused back and forth love song akin to something Moldy Peaches do (think the end of the movie Juno). The strangest thing on the 2 albums is probably The Futureheads’ version of The Lovecats tho – it’s like an early 70′s Clash style punk anthem now.
